US Open Golf Tickets
Torrey Pines Golf Course outside of San Diego, California will host the 2008 U.S. Open on June 9-15. This annual tournament is one of four major championships on the United States PGA Tour and European Tour schedule, but starting in 2008 the event will be an official money event for the Asian Tour also. The first U.S. Open of golf occurred on October 4th, 1895. The competition was held on a 9-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island and consisted of 36 holes total for the competition. Horrace Rawlins won the inaugural U.S. Open earning him $150 cash, a $50 medal, and the U.S. Open Championship Trophy. A clear indication that times has changed unless you live under a rock! Early in history British golfers dominated this event, as the first American winner was John J. McDermott in 1911. Only then did Americans start to dominate this competition, but in the last four years the U.S. Open saw four very different winners. The last four winners had been from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina, respectively. No European has won the event since 1970! The U.S. Open is known has having “Open rough.” Courses that host the U.S. Open are always known for extra tall grass in the rough and tight precision fairways; thus golfers must have a near perfect day to better there chances of victory. Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus have all won this event four times the most in history. Last year, the purse was $7 million with the winner taking $1.26 million (compare that to Mr. Rawlins victory!). Who will win this year? U.S. Open Information: The first U.S. Open was played in on October 4, 1895 on the nine hole course of the Newport (R.I) Golf and Country Club. Ten professionals and one amateur played four rounds in one day, and Horace Rawlins, an English professional who was the assistant at the host course, shot 91-82-173 for the $150 purse, a gold medal, and custody of the Open Championship Cup for one year. These days, scores are a bit lower and prize money considerably higher at the U.S. Open, but the tradition continues. In 2008, the U.S. Open will be held on the South Course at Torrey Pines, and will again feature such world-class players as Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Rory Sabbatini, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, defending champ Angel Cabrera, and, of course, Tiger Woods. Will Tiger continue his assault on Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors, or will another relative unknown win their first career major at a U.S. Open?
