Metallica is a heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California that is one of the top ten selling musical acts of all time. Drummer Lars Ulrich founded the band in 1981 and still serves as the face and leader of the group. Other band members include rhythm guitarist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett. The bass position has been held by many musicians over the years but is currently held by Robert Trujillo. The band first became popular in the thrash subculture as an aggressive, fast-paced, in-your-face act with impressive musical prowess. Commercial success came in 1991 with the release of 'Metallica', which would be the first of five albums to debut at number one on Billboard, a feat only matched by Dave Matthews Band. With over 51 million albums sold in the US, and 12 grammies to their credit, Metallica is now considered an American Rock Insitution and has a large international following as well.
